Spelman College, a private historically Black liberal arts college for women, is situated in Atlanta, Georgia, just west of downtown. Founded in 1881, it holds the distinction of being America's oldest private institution of higher education for Black women. Spelman's urban campus exudes a rich historical ambiance, with noteworthy features such as Sisters Chapel and an impressive collection of 19th-century buildings.
