Savannah State University, established in 1890 as Georgia's first public historically Black college (HBCU), is situated on a 201-acre campus along the salt marshes of coastal Georgia, approximately 4 miles from downtown Savannah's historic district. The campus features Spanish moss-draped oak trees and a mix of historic and modern buildings, with several structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The university maintains a strong focus on marine sciences, utilizing its coastal location and waterfront marine sciences research facility on the Savannah River, while also offering comprehensive programs in business administration, social sciences, and engineering technology. As a residential campus, Savannah State provides traditional dormitory housing for students, with approximately half of undergraduates living on campus. The institution competes in NCAA Division II athletics as the Tigers, participating in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
