Overview

South Dakota State University, the state's largest and most comprehensive higher education institution, is located in Brookings, South Dakota, approximately 55 miles north of Sioux Falls. Founded in 1881 as a land-grant college, it has grown into a public research university that offers more than 200 academic programs across seven colleges. The university's expansive campus is characterized by a blend of historic and contemporary architecture with facilities that support a range of academic pursuits, including notable programs in nursing, agriculture, pharmacy, and engineering. The application process at South Dakota State University is considered moderately selective. On-campus living is catered for with a variety of residential halls and apartment-style housing options. While the university hosts a range of extracurricular activities and organizations, it is also recognized for its athletic teams, known as the Jackrabbits, which compete in the NCAA Division I Summit League for most sports, gaining recognition particularly in wrestling and basketball.

In the most recent statistical year 6,364 prospective students applied, and 5,478 were granted admission.  Of those admitted 2,191 enrolled in the school.  8,155 students are enrolled on a full time basis, and 3,172 attend part time. In-state tuition for 2022/2023, excluding room and board, is $7,773 plus fees of $1,526.
