South Dakota State University, the state's largest and most comprehensive higher education institution, is located in Brookings, South Dakota, approximately 55 miles north of Sioux Falls. Founded in 1881 as a land-grant college, it has grown into a public research university that offers more than 200 academic programs across seven colleges. The university's expansive campus is characterized by a blend of historic and contemporary architecture with facilities that support a range of academic pursuits, including notable programs in nursing, agriculture, pharmacy, and engineering. The application process at South Dakota State University is considered moderately selective. On-campus living is catered for with a variety of residential halls and apartment-style housing options. While the university hosts a range of extracurricular activities and organizations, it is also recognized for its athletic teams, known as the Jackrabbits, which compete in the NCAA Division I Summit League for most sports, gaining recognition particularly in wrestling and basketball.
