The United States Military Academy, commonly known as West Point, is a four-year federal service academy situated on a scenic plateau overlooking the Hudson River, approximately 50 miles north of New York City. Established in 1802, West Point is the oldest of the five service academies and has a historic campus known for its military Gothic architecture. With a strong emphasis on duty, honor, and country, the academy is highly selective, offering a rigorous curriculum with a focus on engineering and military science. Graduates earn a Bachelor of Science degree and are commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army. All cadets live on campus throughout their four years in a structured military environment designed to foster the development of leadership skills. The academy fields a number of NCAA Division I athletic teams, known as the Black Knights, with its football program being particularly noteworthy.
