Alcorn State University, situated in Alcorn State, Mississippi, is a public historically black university established in 1871. It resides in a rural setting, approximately 20 miles southwest of Vicksburg and 80 miles southwest of the state capital, Jackson. The university's academic offerings encompass a range of programs with notable emphasis on agriculture, nursing, and education, reflecting its origins as the nation's first state-supported higher education institution for black students. Alcorn State's campus, characterized by its serene landscape and classical red brick architecture, also provides on-campus housing options for students. The admissions process at Alcorn State University is considered to be moderately selective. While not widely recognized for its athletic programs, the institution does compete in NCAA Division I sports as the Alcorn State Braves.
