Hollins University is a private women's college located in Roanoke, Virginia, framed by the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains. Founded in 1842 as Valley Union Seminary and transitioning to a four-year institution in 1911, Hollins holds the distinction of being one of the oldest women's colleges in the United States. The university's 475-acre campus exhibits a blend of classical red-brick buildings and contemporary structures, creating a historic yet modern environment. Hollins offers undergraduate and graduate programs with a liberal arts focus and is particularly known for its strong creative writing and dance programs. The campus fosters a close-knit academic community with a moderately selective application process. Though not widely celebrated for its athletics, the school competes in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference with the team name "Hollins University Swimmers" for select sports. On-campus living is available with a variety of housing options for students, enhancing the collegiate experience amidst the institution's idyllic setting.
