This school is not easy. The women I met were very hard on me and lacked empathy and compassion. The students here being all women competed with one another constantly, whether it was boys, academics, teachers attention, whatever it was there was a constant battle of trying to fit in and be accepted. Although I left with my head held high, I didn't leave with amazing long lasting friends or amazing experiences. I left with a strong backbone and a F*** You attitude. I learned how to cope and deal with problems on my own. I learned to stand up and alone in front of a group and take the criticism. There was one teacher who was such a B**** and she even said to say "Thank you" to anyone who calls you that. That might sound amusing to some, but to me it showed a lack of compassion and a lot of selfishness. I don't think we need more ego in the world. I think striving to be kinder, more caring, understanding, and considerate will benefit the world and minds of young college students much faster than being selfish and mean. I guess overall it was not what I had hoped for. This school in my opinion lacked charisma, love, compassion, understanding, empathy, kindness, and the people are cold just like the weather. Having Notre Dame next door was the biggest blessing. ND made my Saint Mary's College experience tolerable.

Saint Mary's is a college that encourages women to be the best that they can be in their chosen major/professional goals. Professors actually teach their own classes and are available tor discussion or help every week. There is a strong Catholic faith at this school and an amazing closeness of the women who attend. They will prepare the students to go forth and be successful, moral, thinking adults. Social life is great and it truly is the best of both worlds; in having a Division 1 school to share social activities with and then the unique, small, women-centered college for the academics.

My daughter graduated from St. Mary's in May. During her four years, she was required to take GenEd courses each year that are of no value to her future. It is confounding to me that the predominantly leftist faculty believe it is their job to instill values. If a kid doesn't have a set of values and a moral compass before entering college, it's not the job of the university to force their own values on that student. Both St. Mary's and Notre Dame offer semesters abroad, but there is very little in the way of learning and a lot of drinking. When I sat in the audience during graduation and watched professors award each other with honors, I thought "Who's day is this??" The capper for me was during the robing ceremony (when seniors are awarded their graduation robes), an African American professor shamed the schools (both St. Mary's and Notre Dame) for their "whiteness", actually saying that it made her "sick." This is a school that has lost its way.
