Gallaudet University, located in Washington, D.C., is a premier institution of learning for deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Established in 1864, Gallaudet is a federally chartered university that emphasizes the use of American Sign Language alongside English in its education programs. The university offers a distinctive campus experience on its 99-acre grounds near the nation's capital, with a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs, notably in education, psychology, and deaf studies. The university is selective in its admissions process, seeking students committed to its bilingual mission. On-campus housing is available for students, providing an immersive environment tailored to the needs of its community. Gallaudet is also recognized for its contributions to research and scholarship in fields related to deafness and communication disorders. Not widely known for its athletic programs, the university nevertheless harbors a roster of sports teams known as the Bison, competing in the Division III level of the NCAA.
