My experience at CCSU led to a lot of personal growth, which I continue to look back on as turning points in my life. I was not a great high school student; that changed in college. I learned a lot about myself while at CCSU & learned to believe in myself. That may have not been the case at a bigger school; in fact, I doubt it would've been. After graduation, my degree & GPA held up as well as any other & I landed a job in a very competitive environment. I'd say about 75% of my colleagues who were hired that same year had come from an Ivy. After a few years of hard work there, I have an IT consulting career where I currently make over $200,000 per year. With just my science-related degree from CCSU. I had several mentors while at Central, & was involved in a lot of clubs & campus activities. If you just commute & don't involve yourself at all, I really doubt you will grow as much as a person. You also will likely continue to party & hang out with your high school buddies instead of learning how to get over any fear of the unknown, like making new friends & a new life for yourself. Those will be critical life skills, so, worth thinking on it. If you do commute, try extra hard to get involved in clubs, student government, etc. The other part I was blessed to do at Central was to take a whole lot of classes in all types of areas; as a dumb jock in high school, classes in Philosophy, Psychology, Chemistry, etc broadened my previously very narrow perspective on life. I think it did make me an adaptable person & that is the #1 key in being successful in the world we now live in. "Oh but the knowledge doesn't matter, so why should I go to college/why should I try hard to learn this?" is something you hear all the time... Even though you will forget the knowledge, the neural processes & general skills will benefit you forever. I haven't used much of the "knowledge" of my degree, but my ability to conceptualize & work out abstract, complex problems & then communicate & train the solution, all has its roots in what I learned at CCSU. Some of the dorms were a little rough while I was there & the food was awful - like genuinely terrible - but I hope it's changed. I doubt it, but consider asking a few randos on campus how the food is lately. I know the dorms have improved. I haven't been back in 5 or 6 years. CCSU has one of the safest college campuses I have ever been to. This area of New Britain is also quite safe & quiet. The professors here have the highest qualifications, comparable to many prestigious institutions in my experience. You get greater access to them (if you decide to take advantage) since the class sizes are lower than, say, Uconn. Most are invested in your success, if you care to engage with them. Good luck, hope it helps.
