The University of California-Riverside (UCR) is a public research institution nestled in the suburban setting of Riverside, California, approximately 50 miles east of Los Angeles. Established in 1954 as a college and gaining university status in 1959, UCR has evolved into a significant presence in the UC system, with a focus on expanding knowledge and innovation. The campus is noted for its mid-century modern architectural heritage, reflecting a blend of historic and contemporary designs. UCR offers a host of undergraduate and graduate programs, with particular recognition in the fields of entomology, engineering, and business. The university maintains a moderately selective admissions process. Housing is provided for students with a variety of residential living options available on campus. While UCR supports a range of sports teams, known as the Highlanders, its athletic program is not traditionally highlighted for major collegiate sporting successes.
