Overview

The University of Montana-Western, located in Dillon, Montana, is a public, four-year institution that uniquely offers an experience-based learning model known as "Experience One," where students take one course at a time. Established in 1893, the university has built a reputation for strengths in fields such as Environmental Sciences, Education, and Equine Studies. The campus comprises a mix of traditional and modern architecture set against the picturesque backdrop of the Montana landscape, providing a serene academic environment. Though remote, Dillon is approximately 70 miles south of Butte, the nearest larger city. The university offers a variety of on-campus housing options to accommodate its student body. With a moderately selective admissions process, the University of Montana-Western attracts a diverse range of students. While not specifically known for its athletic programs, the school participates in the NAIA and fields teams under the name Bulldogs.

The University of Montana Western has an open admission policy which permits enrollment by any high school graduate or GED holding student.  1,013 students are enrolled on a full time basis, and 411 attend part time. In-state tuition for 2022/2023, excluding room and board, is $4,658 plus fees of $1,216.
