Overview

Mississippi University for Women, located in Columbus, Mississippi, is a public university that has a unique historical distinction as the first public women?s college in the United States, established in 1884. Its campus encompasses both contemporary buildings and historic structures, reflective of its long-standing presence in higher education. While the university originally admitted only women, it became coeducational in 1982. Situated in a small city, it is approximately 150 miles northeast of the state capital, Jackson, and near the Alabama border.
