The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), established in 1867, is a public research university that epitomizes the land-grant institution's values of innovative research and democratic education. Located in the twin cities of Urbana and Champaign in east-central Illinois, approximately 140 miles south of Chicago, UIUC boasts a diverse and vibrant campus set within a traditional college town atmosphere. The campus is renowned for its substantial collection of buildings reflecting the Beaux-Arts architectural style and is arranged into a coherent system of quadrangles. UIUC offers a broad spectrum of undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs and is particularly distinguished for its College of Engineering, Gies College of Business, and College of Agriculture, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences. With a selective application process, the university draws a highly competitive and academically focused student body. For those opting to live on campus, university housing provides a variety of options, including residence halls and apartments. The fighting Illini athletic teams are well-regarded, particularly in men's basketball and football, competing in the NCAA Division I as members of the Big Ten Conference.
