Overview

Southern Virginia University is a private liberal arts college located in Buena Vista, Virginia, within close proximity to the Appalachian Mountains and approximately three hours from Washington, D.C. Established in 1867, the university presents a picturesque campus known for its Jeffersonian architecture. The institution accommodates a largely undergraduate student population and provides a variety of on-campus housing options. Southern Virginia University operates with an open enrollment policy, allowing for a broadly inclusive admissions process. Academically, the university is recognized for programs in Liberal Arts and Sciences, as well as Visual and Performing Arts. While Southern Virginia University does not have a significant reputation for intercollegiate athletics, it offers a range of sports programs and competes in the NCAA Division III as the Knights.

In the most recent statistical year 1,090 prospective students applied, and 1,084 were granted admission.  Of those admitted 380 enrolled in the school.  1,010 students are enrolled on a full time basis, and 43 attend part time. In-state tuition for 2022/2023, excluding room and board, is $18,858 plus fees of $250.
