Hiwassee College

Overview

Hiwassee College was a private, two-year, residential college located in Madisonville, Tennessee, situated in a rural setting approximately 60 miles southwest of Knoxville. Founded in 1849 by the Methodist Episcopal Church, Hiwassee College had a rich history rooted in Christian values and providing higher education for over 160 years before it permanently closed in the spring of 2019. The campus was noted for its historic buildings nestled in the scenic foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. Although the college had offered a variety of associate degrees and certificates with an emphasis on liberal arts education, Hiwassee College was particularly recognized for several academic programs, including those in animal science, business, and dental hygiene. Hiwassee College had an inclusive admissions policy while it was in operation. On-campus housing was available to its students, offering a traditional college residential experience. While Hiwassee College's athletic teams, known as the Tigers, competed in a range of sports, the college did not gain widespread renown for its athletics programs prior to its closure.
