Overview

Chowan University, founded in 1848, is a small, private university located in Murfreesboro, North Carolina, a rural area within the Inner Banks region of the state. Historically affiliated with the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina, the institution offers a blend of liberal arts education and professional studies, with a range of undergraduate degrees across disciplines including business, education, and the fine arts. Known for its historic architecture that reflects a blend of colonial and modern styles, the campus provides on-campus student housing options. Academically, Chowan is recognized for its graphic communications program, among others, and places a strong emphasis on individualized attention for its diverse student body. The university maintains an inclusive application process with a relatively high acceptance rate. While not prominently known for its athletic programs, the Chowan Hawks compete in the NCAA Division II as members of the Conference Carolinas.

In the most recent statistical year 2,259 prospective students applied, and 1,958 were granted admission.  Of those admitted 215 enrolled in the school.  800 students are enrolled on a full time basis, and 86 attend part time. In-state tuition for 2022/2023, excluding room and board, is $25,880 plus fees of $0.

Chowan University is designated as a Predominantly Black Institution (PBI) and receives federal grants supporting the school's efforts to serve low and middle-income Black Americans.
