Overview

The CUNY Graduate School and University Center, colloquially known as the CUNY Graduate Center, is an advanced teaching and research institution located in midtown Manhattan, New York City. Established as the graduate division of the City University of New York (CUNY) in 1961, the institution has evolved into a hub for doctoral studies and a significant contributor to the intellectual fabric of the city. With an urban campus setting, the center is housed in the former B. Altman and Company building, notable for its Beaux-Arts architecture, and provides no on-campus student housing. The Graduate Center is recognized for its extensive array of doctoral programs, notably in the humanities and social sciences, and its research initiatives across a variety of disciplines. The academic profile is marked by a selective admissions process, attracting a diverse body of students both locally and internationally. While the center does not have an athletics program, its location offers students easy access to the cultural and professional opportunities of New York City.

In the most recent statistical year 147 prospective students applied, and 35 were granted admission.  Of those admitted 5 enrolled in the school.  4,183 students are enrolled on a full time basis, and 4,550 attend part time. In-state tuition for 2022/2023, excluding room and board, is $6,930 plus fees of $480.

CUNY Graduate School and University Center is designated as a Predominantly Black Institution (PBI) and receives federal grants supporting the school's efforts to serve low and middle-income Black Americans.
